Hired to teach on a blues history topic at this blues dance and history event, I prepared a class on the autobiography of B.B. King and how knowledge about his life influences the way we listen to and understand his music.

For this project, I copyedited the novel Through Mud and Monsters, catching an average of fifteen errors per page.

Volunteer Work

Guest Lecturer, BluesGeek; Nashville, TN—February 2018
Selected to give a one hour lecture on a blues topic of my choice, I presented on the blues in the work of playwright August Wilson. I specifically discussed his play Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and how blues music, the blues artist Ma Rainey, and the vernacular dance Black Bottom feature and function to create meaning and center a marginalized history.

Guest Instructor, BluesSHOUT!; Chicago, IL—April 2017
Invited out to teach a class at the largest blues dance event in the USA, I lectured on blues as protest music, focusing on Billie Holiday, and connecting the tradition to modern black music, particularly Beyoncè’s Lemonade.

Administrator, The Blues and Jazz Dance Book Club; International—January 2016 to Present
Working with the organizers of BluesSHOUT!, I lead and moderate book club readings about blues and jazz music and dance. The readings consist of a variety of content, from video documentaries to academic research to works of fiction. I choose the readings, create a schedule for the year, and occasionally set up guest lectures for the group.

For my presentation, “Recuérdame: Positive Cultural Representation in Disney Pixar’s Coco,” I discussed how Disney’s new film successfully provides positive depictions of Mexican families and why that matters, especially during a time of such great discrimination against Mexicans in America.

My conference paper, “Managing White Guilt: Minstrelsy, Music, and James Agee,” focused on the problematic minstrelsy scene in James Agee and Walker Evans’ book, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. I participated on the South Pop panel on the first day of the three-day conference.

In my paper, “The Evolution of ‘the Kiss’ Controversy: from ‘Plato’s Stepchildren’ to J.J. Abrams,” I discussed the problematic responses to the interspecies, interracial kiss in the new reboot of Star Trek films, suggesting that Star Trek continues to highlight and call out problems of racial discrimination in our society.

I presented a portion of my Master’s Thesis, “Re-Creating the Mother of the Blues: Musical Presence in August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” at the August Wilson Society’s 10th Anniversary Conference. I participated on the music panel on the first day of the three-day conference.

Panelist, International Conference for the Fantastic in the Arts 37; Orlando, FL—March 2016
I presented my paper, “’You ain’t nothing if you don’t maintain an image’: Voodoo in Terry Pratchett’s Witches Abroad” at the International Conference for the Fantastic in the Arts. My focus was on highlighting the difference in the voodoo witch in comparison with the other witches Pratchett has created, and the power such stereotypical narratives can have on the public.

Panelist, Multi-Ethnic Literature of the United States Conference 30; Charleston, SC—March 2016
In my presentation, “Black and White Blues: the Othering of Blues Music through Romantic Racialism,” I discussed the racially romanticized history of the blues as folk art and how the policing of blues under a white romantic racial paradigm creates difficulties for talking about the blues as an Othered art form or entity. I argued that until the blues is considered under its own artistic paradigm, one of an ethnic instead of a racial heritage, it cannot be truly dealt with as a valid art form on its own outside of the white, romanticized, historical view of blues as folk art.

Panelist, Southwest English Symposium; Tempe, AZ—February 2016
I presented my paper, “Fighting a Constitutional Ideology ‘as simple as black and white’: Atticus and the Court,” at the Southwest English Symposium. Using Judge Andrew P. Napolitano’s book Dred Scott’s Revenge: A Legal History of Race and Freedom in America and historical information on black-on-white rape trials as a basis for historical examination of race and the law, I examined Atticus Finch’s closing argument in court and argued that his defense of Tom Robinson challenges racial prejudice that was constitutionally instituted and further engrained in U.S. culture through the introduction of Jim Crow laws. I also moderated a panel for the symposium. 

Panelist, South Atlantic Modern Language Association 87; Durham, NC—November 2015
My conference paper, “Jook Joints and the Devil’s Music: Blues’ Influence in Alice Walker’s The Color Purple”, focuses on the historical and cultural views and importance of the jook joint and the traveling blues singer in African American culture. I argued that in The Color Purple, Celie’s experience may be an extreme example, yet Walker uses the blues and its rich history to make the case for blues music as a healing agent, a way that was not just fictionally utilized to endure hardship, but also a documented and proven way to help a long-oppressed people learn to help themselves through hard times. 

Panelist, Wooden O Symposium; Cedar City, UT—August 2015
I presented my paper “Perfect Timing: Apollo’s Justice through Time in Shakespeare’s ‘The Winter’s Tale’” in Cedar City at the Wooden O Symposium. The paper examined Leontes’ questioning of the Oracle of Delphi and Apollo’s swift and continued justice when his Oracle is doubed and then denied. I particularly look at how Apollo utilizes time to enact the justice of law in “The Winter’s Tale.”

Panelist, International Conference for the Fantastic in the Arts 36; Orlando, FL—March 2015
I presented my paper “Lipwig vs. Bent: Reenacting the Keynes–Hayek Debate in Terry Pratchett’s Making Money” at the 36th International Conference for the Fantastic in the Arts. The focus of this presentation was to discuss the implications of retelling the economic policy battle between the two great economists.


“Simple, Dangerous Acts: How Jim Crow Creates Dramatic Tension in Fences”; Fences Study Guide, The August Wilson Society— June 2017
This chapter, part of the study guide for August Wilson’s play Fences and the feature film of the play starring Denzel Washington, covers the influence of Jim Crow laws during the decade when the play takes place. It focuses on the main character and the economic and job advancement struggles he faces because of the racially discriminatory laws.

“’Star Trek’ and the Evolution of ‘the Kiss” Controversy”; Star Trek 50th Anniversary Feature Article, PopMatters— November 2016
This brief feature article details the history surrounding the famous Star Trek episode “Plato’s Stepchildren” and the bold move of an interracial kiss on television. I then posit that the outrage on Reddit threads over the kiss between Spock and Uhura demonstrate similar arguments made against interracial relations in the 1960s, and that Star Trek’s goal with creating these interracial pairings is to force us to think about what it means to be mixed race and to have interracial relationships.

Re-Creating the Mother of the Blues: Musical Presence in August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom; Master’s Thesis, Weber State University—2016
A first-ever musical analysis of the songs in the play Wilson chooses to have Ma Rainey and her band record, my thesis offers a look into both a historical and a theatrical analysis of Ma Rainey, her music, and her relationships with the other characters in the play—both on and off stage.
